In 1946 The Tonga Room celebrated its first anniversary, the San Francisco 49ers played their first season, and Frank and Jessie Morgan bought 2862 Bush Street. For the next seventy years the home served as the center of family life for holidays and special occasions. Today, nieces and nephews remember Jazz tunes played on the old Victrola in the front parlor, sliding down a glossy walnut bannister, and sitting down to dinner in the dining room that could seat up to twenty.
One of the reasons it stayed in the family so long is that the floor plan served every need. Each room was so big they never needed to worry about where the furniture would go. The master bedroom had a roomy adjoining bath, while the second bedroom stretched across the back and enjoyed a lovely garden view along with easy access to the second bath off the hall. The third bedroom with its extra closet and sink could even work for a boarder in a pinch. Over the years, the family grew pears and lemons in the deep back yard, added a third bath on the main floor and stored generations of memorabilia in the full-length basement with its decommissioned maid’s room and bath.
